In The Present Moment for Pauline Oliveros

In 2023, Tina Pearson was commissioned by the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre (Alberta, Canada) to create two on site pieces based on Pauline Oliveros’ early Sonic Meditations for an upcoming exhibition “In The Present Moment“, curated by Haema Sivanesan. Working with participants* from a Banff Centre Visual Arts residency, Pearson facilitated Deep Listening and soundmaking workshops, and listening soundwalks toward performance of Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations Environmental Dialogue, and Breathe In / Breathe Out, both composed in the 1970s. Supporting the project were Banff Centre for the Arts personnel Jacqueline Bell, Walter Phillips Gallery curator; Janine Windolph, Director of Indigenous Arts; Curtis Doherty, videographer; Jozef Karoly, video editor; and Ben Ewing, audio engineer. The results were a 4-channel audio rendition of Breathe In / Breathe Out, and a video interpretation of Environmental Dialogue. Both pieces were included in the exhibition at the Gallery from September 15 to December 13, 2023.
