Wind, Raven, Flute

A sonic meditation performed October 8, 2014 at the off-grid site where a family sawmill once operated, on Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation lands on Red Gut Bay, Rainy Lake, Northwestern Ontario.

Audio

Only the large cement pad remains in the increasingly overgrown clearing, with remnants from the mill (rusted metal, broken glass) and bullets from target shooting. The recording focused on capturing the wind, with the flute accompanying, swept and tossed along its  undulations. The meditation focused on listening with the wind as it floated memories of the family members (blood and chosen) and others who were part of the mill’s years of operation before it burned down. The raven appears at the beginning of the recording.
